AI and machine learning at Dahlgren go beyond apps and simulations.

Our teams apply AI/ML to real-world combat systems, sensor data, and modeling efforts to support decision-making and system performance in demanding environments. The focus isn’t on hype—it’s on reliability, trust, and mission impact.

This opportunity is open to students seeking hands-on experience and graduating seniors seeking an entry-level, full-time role. In both cases, you’ll work alongside engineers and scientists applying AI/ML where performance and accuracy truly matter.

If you’re interested in AI that moves from theory into real systems, this is where algorithms turn into action.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your background and experience level, you may support:

  • Applying machine learning to sensor and system data
  • Data preprocessing, feature extraction, and analysis
  • Developing, training, and evaluating ML models
  • Supporting modeling and simulation efforts
  • Algorithm validation, testing, and performance assessment
  • Integrating AI/ML solutions into larger systems
  • Documenting results and technical findings
  • Collaborating with software, systems, and domain experts

Assignments are scaled to your academic level and skills.

Who This Is For

This role may be a great fit if you are:

✔ A current student looking for applied AI/ML experience
✔ A graduating senior (May 2026) seeking an entry-level AI/ML role
✔ Interested in applied machine learning, not just coursework
✔ Curious how AI supports real-world systems and decision-making

Required Qualifications

You may be a good fit if you:

Are pursuing (or have recently completed) a degree in:

  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Data Science
  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
  • Applied Mathematics or Statistics
  • Systems Engineering or related field

Have experience with or coursework in:

  • Python or similar programming languages
  • Data analysis or statistics
  • Algorithms, ML, or AI fundamentals

Enjoy problem-solving and working with data in applied contexts

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience with ML libraries or frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)
  • Experience working with real-world or noisy data
  • Exposure to modeling & simulation
  • Understanding of system performance, validation, or testing
  • Research projects, internships, or team-based technical work

What You’ll Gain

For current students:
• Hands-on experience applying AI/ML
• Mentorship from engineers and scientists
• Exposure to mission-driven systems
• Resume-worthy project experience

For graduating seniors:
• Entry-level role in applied AI/ML
• Structured onboarding and development
• Experience working on trusted, real-world systems
• Long-term career growth opportunities
